Holistic VS Biological VS Functional Dentistry

There are so many words used in describing dentist that uses the biological approach to the oral health. Although these words are normally used interchangeably, there had been subtle differences in its actual definitions.

Below are the 8 words for biological dentistry which may be used interchangeably that actually mean a bit different:

  • Alternative dentistry - it pertains to the truth that alternative dentists use diverse methods than the conventional dentists, like oral probiotics, whole-body health and the focus on dietary supplements.
  • Biocompatible dentistry - if somebody says “biocompatible”, they mainly mean that whatever healing they’re using cannot react badly with the entire body health. An example is the biocompatible dentist who avoids fluoride, SLS, mercury and the entire harmful procedures such as root canals, unless this totally cannot be avoided.
  • Integrative dentistry - the word “integrative” is implying that integrative dentists are considering the entire body in relation with the mouth or vice versa. Not just integrative dentists that are concerned with the body-mouth connection, but they attempt to integrate medicines with dentistry.
  • Natural dentistry - the natural dentist utilizes only natural means in taking care of your oral health. It will include essential oils, dietary supplements, or simply evading the man-made chemicals that is in the toothpaste.
  • Unconventional dentistry - it means that the methods aren’t conventional or the mainstream. The unconventional dentist uses methods that can have particular evidence that will support them, but cannot be widely recognized in the community of dentistry.
  • Holistic dentistry - what’s the difference between the regular dentist and the holistic dentist? The difference is he holistic dentist treat the whole individual to make sure of the oral health and vice versa, even considering social and mental factors.
  • Functional dentistry - this functional dentists are being concerned with the functions of the whole body, as this relates to the oral health. These doctors are looking for the root causes seemingly not related to what the symptoms are.
  • Biological dentistry - it refers to the dentists that can follow a philosophy about how the German Biological Medicine is applied to the oral health. These dentists believe that the entire body affects our mouth or vice versa. For example, the dental mercury fillings can cause dental cavitations or the entire-body side effects can cause systemic disease.

As you will see, basically all the biological dentists had been biocompatible dentists, and every unconventional dentist had been the alternative dentists. However, not all the natural dentists are also biological dentists. These words are almost the same, but will mean a slightly different thing.

How much does one biological dentist cost? The biological dentists may cost more on the standard than the conventional dental procedure. They are using less invasive treatments, most cutting-edge, and opt for those materials that are more expensive but safer.

But, this does not mean that the biological dentistry is not affordable — by no means. And not just they are doing work with the individual situations of the patients, they are working with you and with insurance provider you are connected to find out what has been covered by the dental insurance plan you enrolled.
